Psychological Assessments

Psychological assessments are comprehensive assessments conducted by psychologists.  They are covered by most third party insurance plans and by Medicaid. These evaluations are designed to diagnose and describe emotional problems, behavioral problems, cognitive deficits, mental illness, and a range of other issues.  A psychological evaluation is designed to help describe how a person is thinking and feeling, and how those patterns may contribute to current functioning.

Psychological evaluations usually take at least 3 or 4 hours, and may be scheduled in more than one visit.  They generally involve an interview with the psychologist and some standardized paper-and-pencil testing.  This testing usually includes measures of emotional, personality, and intelligence, and helps to describe how these factors are related and contribute to the current picture.

Evaluation Results

In most cases, results are available within 5-7 business days, however,  Psychological Evaluation results may take longer depending on the number of issues being addressed and the specific diagnostic tools being used by the psychologist.

The evaluation process is used to create a professional diagnosis and suggested treatment outline.  A client has the option of reviewing the diagnosis directly with the reviewing psychologist to develop a specific therapy plan or the results can be  sent to your preferred licensed counselor or medical doctor.

Additionally, the client can request that the results  also be forwarded to their legal representative, lawyer, employer, presiding court or probation office. Options for treatment centers, including appropriate treatment programs offered at First Step are explained by staff.

Psychiatric Care

First Step, now has combined its services with two Consulting Psychiatrists.  this addition to our staffing is and integral part in our efforts to provide coordinated treatment for our clients, based on an Integrated Care Model.  Clients under psychiatric care are often referred for psychological evaluation, testing and therapeutic services.  A team approach is used in serving our clients.  First Step therapists and psychologists work closely with the Consulting Psychiatrist to develop a specific integrated treatment plan.
