First Step Wellness & Recovery (FSI) is committed to ensuring the confidentiality of its clients, families and others actively involved a patient’s treatment while seeking information, education or participating in any of the range of Integrated Health Services and programs we offer. As outlined by federal law in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) client personal health information (PHI) is considered privileged information that can only be shared or released per the specific guidelines and requirements established in the legislation. All covered entities must adhere to these standards or face possible civil and criminal penalties.

First Step makes every reasonable effort and accommodation to fulfill its duties and obligations as outlined under both the Privacy Rule and Security Rule. Formal procedures and documents stating our client’s rights, as well as our responsibilities to the patient are established and monitored. You may view these documents and procedures on this page or download them.

Additionally all of our staff are bound by licensure to follow a professional Code of Ethics within their specialties that establish guidelines for the fair and proper treatment of clients, confidentiality, and ethics.

Our goal is to treat our clients and their families in a discreet and professional manner at all times as we partner with them to address their specific issues or concerns. This environment of mutual respect and trust is a basic building block of effective treatment or counseling.

Detailed information on federal requirements, regulations and avenues for complaints, can be found on the United States Department of Health & Human Services website: http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa

Questions or complaints can also be directed to the FSI Privacy or Security Officer at either of our two sites by phone or in person during normal business hours. The addresses and phone numbers are listed on our home page.
